Shea Lolin is one of the most versatile musicians working in London with work frequently undertaken in performance, composition, conducting, teaching, journalism and festival management. In addition to this, he works for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Clarinet Classics
Shea began to play the clarinet at the age of seventeen and with clear musical intentions entered into a degree only one year on. He studied at Colchester Institute School of Music with Charles Hine and the late Angela Fussell for performance, Alan Bullard for composition and Christopher Phelps for conducting. While at Colchester Institute, Shea won the Brookes Trophy for Woodwind Ensembles, the Harvey Benham Cup for Mixed Ensembles and the John Myatt Cup for Solo Woodwind.
As a soloist, Shea has played around the United Kingdom ( London in particular) and Ireland. With an active interest in the British clarinet repertoire, he has given performances of all the British repertory works by Arnold, Bliss, Bowen, Bush, Cooke, Ellerby, Ferguson, Finzi, Howells, Hurlstone, Ireland, Ridout, Roxburgh and Stanford. As a chamber musician, Shea has played alongside groups such as the Mühlfeld Trio, the Enigma String Quartet and FourSight, performing trios, quartets and quintets from the classical to contemporary. He also plays for the City of London Symphonic Winds.
In addition to conducting the Bloomsbury Woodwind Ensemble, Shea has formed and directs the East London Clarinet Choir . As a church musician, Shea is director of music and organist for the churches of St. Stephens and St. Nicholas’ in Manor Park as well as St. Michael and All Angels, Gidea Park. He has also performed live for BBC radio from Birmingham Cathedral and BBC television for the children’s programme ‘Smile’.
Shea Lolin is active as a composer and arranger of wind music. Metamorphoses on Life Themes (2004) was dedicated and recorded by Charles Hine and whilst teaching at Canon Palmer School was commissioned to write Long, Long Ago (2004) for the school choir. Shea also orchestrated Belizean Fantasy (composed by Francis Reneau) for a special commission with the Belizean government to celebrate twenty-five years of independence. Other compositions include wind, vocal and piano music.
